Totnes Costume Museum

Very exciting that this week my work has gone into the window exhibition at the Totnes Costume Museum. The theme is 'Innovation with Fibres' and it shows some of my latest handwoven scarves that are made using a clever combination of fibres that collapse to create heavily textured fabrics.

'One Year On' at New Designers 2011!!!

It is very exciting that I am amoung 50 other designers who have set up their businesses in the last year and have been selected to show at One Year On in July! I went to the prepare day on Tuesday which was a brilliant opportunity to meet all the other exhibitors as well as Jethro Macey who is curating the show this year. It is also fast approaching and so I busy producing lots of new work to showcase. Here are some of my newly designed cushion fabrics, woven on the Jacquard in the Design Centre at University College Falmouth using my naturally dyed silks.

Tresithick Upholstery Course

As part of a new direction for my weaving I decided to learn some traditional upholstery techniques so that I can apply my work to furniture. I spent a week with Richard and Sonja Hooper who run Tresithick Upholstery Training at Granpound near Truro. I had such a brilliant week where I learnt how to strip down the old fabric and stuffing from a chair so that I could start from the bare frame to rebuild and upholster the chair using traditional methods. I really suprised me how many layers are used and how time consuming it is to build up a firm and even seat. Here are some of the pictures of me at work:

My love of weaving......

To me weaving is alchemy. To be able to express myself through the medium of yarns and dyes, creating something beautiful, interesting and suprising.

This may seem strange but I often find a flat piece of fabric fairly boring. This, coupled with my love of textures and experiencing through touch is what drives my creative weaving. My curiosity of the technical side of weaving fuels me to experiment with making tactile fabrics, whilst developing my knowledge of how cloth is constructed.

All my work is inspired by nature. I use the textures found around the Cornish coastline where I live as a starting point for capturing nature in cloth. I combine traditional handwoven techniques with the modern computerised Jacquard loom to create a range of exciting fabrics. I also use ancient dyeing techniques using natural dyes to create a colour palette that is truely taken from nature.
